The Center for Financial Studies, founded in 1967 and known until 1996 as the Institut für Kapitalmarktforschung), is a financially independent research institute affiliated to the Goethe University Frankfurt. Its sponsoring body is the Gesellschaft für Kapitalmarktforschung e.V., which counts amongst its members more than 80 banks, insurances, consulting firms, commercial enterprises and individual members.

Mission Statement

The Center for Financial Studies (CFS) is an independent research institution with a strong international orientation. CFS conducts applied research in the areas of financial markets, financial intermediaries and monetary and macroeconomics. It serves as a forum for dialogue between academia, policymaking institutions and the financial community and offers specialized executive training and development.

The CFS cooperates with other financial research centers and is an active participant in international research networks. CFS research programs directed by academic experts aim to generate collaboration on research projects between outside researchers, CFS staff and practitioners. Research findings are presented at international conferences and published in international academic journals or practice-oriented outlets with wide reach in the financial community. CFS aims to be an active partner of policymaking institutions and the financial community in fostering the application of research findings in policy and industry practice. To facilitate this process CFS promotes a variety of initiatives, including research and policy conferences, workshops and seminars.

The CFS aims not only to provide accessible answers to questions on monetary and capital market theory within the framework of regular events, but also to offer a platform for discussions for particularly topical issues, to encourage the informal exchange of information, and to stimulate the academic debate in Frankfurt via various publications.

Focal points for research within the program areas are determined by the CFS Program Directors. Renowned researchers (Fellows) from at home and abroad, who are regular visitors to the CFS, collaborate on the ensuing research projects together with the academic staff at the CFS. The results of this research are presented at international conferences and published in international journals. In addition, within the framework of the individual programmes, workshops and research conferences are held to discuss prevailing issues. The co-ordination of this research is supervised by the Research Advisory Council of the Gesellschaft für Kapitalmarktforschung e.V. as well as the Directors of the CFS.

With its seminars, conferences and inhouse meetings, which last between one and four days, the CFS makes its contribution to qualification training and executive development in designated fields. Renowned university lecturers, leading practitioners and important international partners provide top quality knowledge as well as the methods and instruments for practical application. The seminars, conferences and workshops are intended for mid and top level management executives, interested academics and experts from the specialist departments of banks, insurances, the service sector, trade and industry.

Directors

The Directors of the Center for Financial Studies are entrusted with the overall management of the research institute. They bear the responsibility for the direction and co-ordination of the program areas and ensure that the quality of research adheres to a high standard. At the same time they cooperate with the Program Directors to continue developing new research concepts and structures as well as their implementation. They are responsible for ensuring that the recommendations of the Research Advisory Council are put into practice. Finally, the Directors are involved with all matters relating to the structure and functioning of the boards and to funding.

Program Directors

The Program Directors are responsible for the specialist supervision and orientation of the academic teams. They monitor quality standards, put together the teams and co-ordinate their respective fields. This specifically involves the academic structure, the initiation and planning of specialised conferences and lecture events as well as the choice and supervision of the Fellows working on a particular project.
