Breaking up banks and ending the bonus culture

David Shirreff, former Frankfurt correspondent of The Economist

Mr Shirreff will discuss proposals made in his book “Don’t Start From Here – We Need A Banking Revolution”. This new book argues that reforms so far in Europe have not gone nearly far enough. Changes recommended by such committees as Liikanen in the EU and Vickers in Britain have been diluted by the national and EU rule-making process to become almost meaningless. Regulation has become too complex. At the same time the self-service culture at many banks has hardly changed, despite efforts to reduce bonuses.
